NIGHTS FROM THE GARDENS OF SPAIN
The Early Music of Spain and Portugal

featuring:
Derick Nichols, chamber organ
Brian Torosian, Baroque guitar

DePaul University Art Museum
in the Richardson Library
2350 North Kenmore (at Fullerton), Chicago
$20 ($15 seniors, $5 students)
(DePaul University students FREE)

This event features two remarkable performers. Derick Nichols will perform solo organ works of Domenico Zipoli (1688-1726) and other Spanish and Portuguese composers residing in colonial Latin America as well as contemporaneous works from Spain. And guitarist Brian Torosian will present works from 17th and 18th century Latin America and Spain. Most interesting, you will hear the influence of the "old world" on the "new world," and vice versa, due in part to the fact that during the 17th century, priests and missionaries taught Amerindians and Africans the elements of European music

Johann Sebastian Bach is considered by many as the greatest composer of western music. His chamber compositions are infrequently performed as a complete program unto themselves.  At this event you will have the chance, in a way, to hear this repertoire in the context of their 18th century environment. Featured will be the Sonata in G Minor for viola da gamba and harpsichord (BWV 1029), the Violin Sonata in E Major (BWV 1016, the Harpsichord Concerto in A Major (BWV 1055), and more.
