Following Ars Musica Chicago's
success last year presenting the United States premier of Egidio Duni's opera NERONE, conductor Stephen Alltop directs members
of the Northwestern University Baroque Music Ensemble in an all-Italian concert of two dramatic oratorios by Giacomo Carissimi: JEPTHA andJONAH. Carissimi’s setting of JEPTHA, for 6 voices and continuo, is remarkable for its exquisite choruses and heartfelt laments.
In JONAH, which is scored for multiple soloists, chorus, strings and continuo, Carissimi tells the famous tale of Jonah’s attempt
to hide from God, his stormy flight, being swallowed by the whale, and his ultimate prophecy to the people of Ninevah. The program also
includes two richly harmonic and virtuosic concerti grossi of Pietro Locatelli.

The closing concert of the season contrasts the music of the Ars Nova, exemplified by the work of Machaut and
Landini with a lively new style developing in the Low Countries during the first half of the 15th century. It came to be
known as the early Renaissance.
Sacred and secular songs will be featured in popular forms of the period - the ballad, the motet,
and the chanson, among others. In addition, dance music will be interspersed among the songs. Although instruments were not specified
for instrumental music at this time, we know from iconographical sources that harp and lute were a common pairing.
A variety
of dance forms are explored with this pairing of instruments, such as the estampie, the bassadansa and the saltarello. Included in
this concert are pieces by Guillaume de Machaut, Francesco Landini, Jacopo da Bologna, John Dunstaple, Guillaume Dufay, and Gilles
Binchois, among others.
